Experts advise against using skin care products

Physicians have cautioned people about using skin care products on both themselves and their kids.

According to the specialists who presented at the SYNLAB Nigeria webinar on allergy management, it has been discovered that many organic creams,

fragrances, and makeup contain ingredients that the immune systems recognize and attempt to eliminate, which results in allergic symptoms.

Speaking, Dr. Viola Ikebudu, a consultant dermatologist, urged people to be careful with what they apply to their bodies, stressing that since the

skin is the largest organ in the body, anything placed there has a chance to spread to other areas of the body.

Dr. Ayodele Renner, a consultant pediatrician, suggested parents make sure they buy items with a light or no scent because it would be better for the kids’ skin than those

with powerful scents.

He emphasized that since certain perfumes may contain ingredients that can predispose infants to allergic reactions,

parents should, if at all feasible, choose fragrance-free items. Fragrance is a major allergen. He advised parents to consider

their baby’s skin type when selecting skin care products and to consult a doctor if they observe that their skin is becoming dryer than usual. This is in contrast to just depending on the advice of others.

Among the symptoms of allergies mentioned by the speakers were dizziness and fainting, loss of consciousness,

swelling of the lips and tongue, redness, itching, and hives, watery and red eyes, shortness of breath and wheezing, stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhea.

They suggested that anyone exhibiting these symptoms should see a doctor to rule out any food allergies.

According to records that are now accessible, one in eight children worldwide have asthma, one in thirteen have eczema, and one in eight have allergic rhinitis.

Dr. Renner shared some statistics regarding the prevalence of allergies.

The event also revealed some intriguing figures, indicating that 10–30 percent of people worldwide suffer from allergies. Additionally,

it was discovered that women are more likely than males to experience allergies, and that allergies are more prevalent in cities than in rural areas.
