NAFDAC shuts down Bakery
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has closed a bakery in Sokoto State for using unfortified sugar and illegal bromate.
Mr. Garba Adamu, NAFDAC State Coordinator, said on Friday, July 13, 2024, that the bakery was discovered during a special operation by agency personnel.
“We discovered that the bakery was employing saccharine, an unregistered foreign sugar, as a sweetener in conjunction with illegal bromate in their operations.
“The items were seized for destruction and the bakery is shut down until it complies with regulations and directives,” he informed me.
Adamu emphasized that only fortified registered sugar containing Vitamin A, micronutrients, and other vitamins can be sold and consumed in Nigeria.
“This is a Federal Government policy enforced by NAFDAC and other government organizations to guarantee that customers receive the greatest nutritional and health benefits from the products.
“Six other bakeries were also sanctioned for poor hygiene as enforcement officers led by Mr Buhari Manzo increased routine inspection visits to bakeries throughout the state.”
“Bakeries are monitored to ensure that they don’t use saccharine or other banned items as a substitute for fortified regulated ingredients,” Adamu said.
The state coordinator also warned manufacturers not to use contaminated, counterfeit, unregistered, or expired commodities in their establishments, emphasizing that NAFDAC would continue to enforce the law on a regular basis.
Adamu stated that the program would be expanded to Local Government Areas as part of the agency’s efforts to ensure that hygienic foods are distributed.
He urged the people to be vigilant of purchasing unregistered products and to report any questionable practices or contaminations to NAFDAC.
